From the car park, the route heads west through Ash Dale Plantation, passing Carlton Grange, before crossing the Helmsley Carlton road. Continuing through Riccal Dale Wood we descend to Hasty Bank Farm and then head north west to Howl Wood Farm and onto both Snaper House and Potter House. At the latter farm the route heads south along the side of Roppa Wood before a short climb on to Helmsley Bank. After a short drinks' stop at the top of Baxton's Lane, an open track with good views takes us back to the cars at Cowhouse Bank.
