Overview

Length: 10 miles / 16 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Walk leader: Beth (07956242703)

Following the success of walking The Ridgeway in 2023, the Chiltern Young Walkers have set themselves a new challenge of walking Shakespeare's Way in 2024!

A 146 mile route that winds its way through the Cotswolds, the Chiltern hills and along the Thames between Shakespeare's Historic Birthplace and The Globe Theatre in London. Its a beautiful fully signposted route that goes through towns such as Chipping Norton, Woodstock and Marlow as well as the beautiful city of Oxford and of course a long section along the River Thames in London. We're kicking the challenge off with a double bill, which you can do either part of as a day trip or stay for an little weekend away!

One of the shortest and gentlest sections of the route, this section takes us through bustling Marlow and along the Thames Path until Bourne End, where we'll leave the river and head North-East towards Wooburn and then South-East, mostly through woodland, to Burnham Beeches.

There is one hill around halfway through but otherwise this is a remarkably flat route for The Chilterns.

There are a couple of options for pub stops enroute so all being well we'll find time for one.

Please note that we'll be meeting at the end point at The Broadway Car Park at Burnham Beeches at 10.30. You are welcome to meet us in Marlow by the entrance to Higginson Park (the entrance by the mini roundabout that joins Pound Lane with the High Street, by the public loos) at 11am, but if there are not enough drivers to lift you back to Marlow you may need to use public transport to get back to Marlow at the end (see bus info below).

For those meeting us at 10.30, we will gather into as few cars as possible and then drive to Marlow, leaving at least one car in Farnham Common. At the end, we'll give the drivers a lift back to their car.

Both Marlow and Farnham Common are accessible by public transport - the X74 bus connects to High Wycombe, where you can also get a bus to Marlow (the 800/850 bus). This bus also connects to Reading and Henley-On-Thames for those travelling from that direction.
