Join us for a magnificent day out walking from Shanklin. We will leave Shanklin along the old railway line but soon leave the surfaced path to climb up to the top of Martin's Down and on to the summit of Shanklin Down. The climb up is steep and strenuous but the views from the top are magnificent. We then retain the height and views as we continue along the chalk ridge of Luccombe, Bonchurch and St Boniface Downs before descending, again steeply, towards Ventnor. We then head East and take a lower route below St Boniface Down to join the diverted Coastal Path, no longer on the coast due to coastal erosion. This takes us through the picturesque village of Old Shanklin as we return to Shanklin. If the weather is nice there will be the opportunity to spend time on the beach before returning to the station.
Let leader know if you plan to join us so that I can share any travel updates. We will be travelling to Shanklin from Petersfield Station via Wightlink ferry. You should purchase an off peak return ticket to Shanklin (current price £32.35 with a railcard). Parking at Petersfield Station is £4.40 and can be paid by App or by card at station ticket machine.
Bring lunch and plenty of drink. There may be a chance to stop in Old Shanklin for refreshments. Wear suitable footware and clothing for the weather and bring bathers if you fancy a swim.
