This walk takes in the broad view from the Wye Crown and a couple of pretty churches before heading through the ancient King's Wood. The best bluebells are in different spots each year; this is the end of the season. With a good 5 miles of wood, we can hope to come across some beautiful sections if they are still in bloom.
Just two notable climbs in the walk - one brief but vigorous, the other steadier but takes you by surprise. Pace will be brisk to give us time later to linger in particularly flowery spots, but not super fast.
Pub at lunchtime for drinks only (7.5 miles in – so have a good breakfast), and a historic pub at the end (0.7 miles from station, included in total distance, torch can be helpful). Bring a packed lunch.
Terrain: fields, woods
Travel: Take 9:34 from London Charing Cross (9:37 London Waterloo East, 9:43 London Bridge), arr. Wye 11:02.
Alternative: Take 10:04 from St Pancras International, change at Ashford International (arr. 10:42, dep. 10:56), arr. Wye 11:02. HS1 ticket required which is more expensive. NB the group will not be able to wait if delays mean you miss the hourly connection to Wye.
For either train, buy return to Chilham.
Upon arrival in Wye, try to keep to one side as the station entrance is small and between a level crossing and a narrow bridge.
