Overview

From Tavistock, we’ll take the King’s Way and the route of the disused London and South Western railway to Harford Bridge. We’ll head to Longtimber Tor beside the River Tavy for coffee, before climbing to the flank of Cox Tor. Weather permitting, we’ll enjoy fabulous views! Our lunch spot will be after our climb, perhaps at Feather Tor. It’s almost all downhill after that, taking in the peace and tranquility of Pennycomequick, before arriving at Lutyens’ Pimple and our final descent into Tavistock.

Start time:
9:30 am
Estimated finish time:
3:30 pm
Difficulty:
Strenuous
Distance:
19.3km / 12.0mi
Ascent:
548.6m / 1800ft

circular

Terrain is a mix of moorland tracks, fields, woodland paths and lanes. There are toilets about 5 minutes after the start of our walk in Tavistock at Bedford Square plus an opportunity to grab a take out coffee or snack as we walk through. Dogs are welcome, however, please be aware that on the section between Harford Bridge and Mary Tavy, there a few stiles which don’t have “dog gates” so be prepared to help your dog if you want to bring them along.

The walk is 12 miles and the ascent from Peter Tavy to Cox Tor needs a good level of fitness. We’ll need to keep up a good pace throughout the walk given the shorter autumn days.

Features

  • Toilets available
  • Car parking available

Start point is the free car park at Pixon Lane. It’s just down the hill from the Market Inn and is on the same side of the road as the Market Inn. From the road, there are signs to the Squash Club and King’s at the car park entrance. This isn’t an official car park but is used extensively by locals. There is a pay and display car park (Riverside) which is almost opposite but that car park is not the start point.
