Fancy a Grade 1 scramble in the Peak? This day walk on Kinder visits three in a row! An early start in Edale gets us onto the Pennine Way and then around to Crowden Clough, the first scramble is here and finishes on the plateau: walking round to Grindsbrook and dropping down the access path gives easy walking to the second scramble of the day Grindsbrook Clough, which again tops out on the Kinder rim. Continuing to traverse the edge of the plateau around to Golden Clough gives us access to the foot of the third scramble of the day; Ringing Roger. This completed we re-join Golden Clough and descend back to Edale via The Nab for tea and medals. The first two routes are enclosed within the cloughs and so are well protected against bad weather, the third is the opposite in character and is a 'buttress' with various routes to choose from but will be avoided if the wind is strong. This walk was recce'd during the recent dry spell and all of the rock steps in the scrambles were found bone dry and very grippy, this will change if the weather is wet on the day. In this event we will exercise judgement and take alternative paths if deemed necessary by the walk leader.
Due to the nature of this walk we are limiting the numbers to 10 and would suggest that only experienced walkers sign up for the day (as suggested in the Ramblers guidelines for walks graded as technical). Strong footwear is essential plus of course the normal clothing for moorland walking, waterproofs etc. The rock is gritstone throughout so you may wish to consider gloves to avoid grazed hands and fingers. There was no loose rock found on the recce but these are popular routes and the edge is likely to busy with others so feel welcome to wear firm head wear or a helmet if you prefer. There no stiles on the walk but no dogs please due to the scrambling.
