Overview

Come hither all ye zealous walkers and savour the beauty of early autumn in the South Downs. We begin the walk by heading north out of Rowlands Castle to warm up with Chalton Down, after which we right-angle turn to the east and make for Compton Down. Next we pass through a series of three delightfully unspoiled, archetypally English Sussex villages: the Mardens, namely West, Up, and East. Then we head south through Kingley Vale with its ancient yew trees and back west to Rowlands Castle, over more hills patched with woodland.

This will be a long and demanding walk with numerous hills - a good level of fitness required. Total ascent 860m.

Please bring a packed lunch. We can have a pub break on the way too if we're doing well for time.
