Starting at the Melrose Abbey car park we will walk to Darnick along the old Waverly railway line. We will then walk up Chiefswood Road until we turn off at the start of the Quarry Hill Path. It's only a 200ft climb to the top of Quarry Hill but there are some steep sections. On a clear day there are nice views of Melrose and Galashiels when we get to the top. From there it's back downhill towards Melrose along a wooded path at the bottom of the Eildons. Then we join the St Cuthberts Way coming down the steps (all 131 of them) into Melrose.
Although the walk is mostly on good paths, Quarry Hill can often be muddy so wear sturdy boots and if you use them, bring poles. We will have 1 short drink stop at the top of Quarry Hill. Coffee and cake at the end in one of the local cafes.
Circular walk, grade D, easy. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
