We walk through Ashkirk and on for just over a mile on a level quiet road to reach the Borders Abbey Way. The path rises steeply at first through woodland and fields to the high point of the walk, from where we enjoy spectacular views to the east and southward to the border hills beyond Hawick.
Walking in this direction means we avoid the slog up from Hawick to the Fower Road Ends, and we will be walking towards the long views. Once down into Hawick itself, we can swing off the BAW towards the far end of the High Street and its cafes.
Hillwalking gear required. There will be a lunch stop and drinks stops as required.
Remember to bring bus passes, where appropriate.
Linear walk, grade B, moderate. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
