Overview

A climb up the steep path through Cwm Bwchel to reach the ridge, then head NNW passing Bal Mawr trig pillar (607m) and the stony top of Chwarel y Fan (670m). We’ll drop off the ridge to reach Capel Y Ffin, passing the Monastery founded by “Father Ignatius” in 1869, and also the beautiful little Church of St Mary’s. Now we walk on fields & tracks before ascending a steep path to reach the broad ridge of Hatterall Hill and walk along Offa’s Dyke before we descend & return to Llanthony.

The 2 climbs are steep, in parts rough & stony, ditto the 2 descents. Some of the lower paths can be muddy, even after relatively dry weather. There are 6 stiles to cross on the way back down to Llanthony. In good weather the views from the ridges are magnificent, so fingers crossed! The pace will be moderate to account for the height gain.
