A gentle stroll exploring the farmland and nature reserve on the southern edge of York.
We start at the York University Sports Centre, and head along the edge of Walmgate Stray, before turning towards Germany Beck, site of the Battle of Fulford in 1066. After crossing over the A64, we follow a farm track south towards Heslington Tilmire. This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and an important site for ground nesting birds. Footpaths take us back over the A64, before skirting the edge of Fulford Golf Course back to the University.
The walk is mostly level and on tracks and good footpaths.
🅿️ Parking is at the University Sports Centre on Newton Way (off Heslington Lane), Campus South, and is free at weekends – NB, don't rely on the postcode to find the car park, as the whole of the university campus has the same postcode
🚲 Bike racks also available at the car park
🚌 U1 and U2 buses run from the railway station and city centre to the university, and the meeting point is about a 10 minute walk from the Campus Central/Library bus stop – we recommend the bus from the Station at 0920 and Merchantgate at 0923
🐶 Dogs are welcome, but must be on a lead at all times.
