Overview

Please note the earlier start time, which is due to the shorter daylight hours, and parking pressures at Edale!

This walk on Kinder Scout centres on the eastern section of the hill, involving a walk around the lower slopes before ascending Crookstone hill to the wide ridge which forms the eastern arm of the plateau.  We will return along this spur to Upper Tor, before making the steep descent from Grindslow Knoll, and the return to Edale village.  This route promises some spectacular views (weather permitting!), but as ever – it’s Kinder, so it’s hard graft – but usually very rewarding!

Start time:
9:15 am
Estimated finish time:
4:00 pm

Strenuous
Distance:
15.4km / 9.6mi
Ascent:
636.1m / 2087ft

circular

Be prepared for strenuous ascent; rough and potentially boggy ground. The paths on Kinder are generally rough, difficult, and require extra care. The strenuous grade reflects the sustained and steep ascent/descent, to/from the plateau. Sturdy waterproof footwear and clothing is essential for any walkers joining this walk. As this is a high moorland area, and very exposed, ensure you bring warm clothing - regardless of the weather forecast on the day.

Bring packed lunch.  Toilets are at the start/finish only.  Café and pubs in Edale at the walk end.

Allow plenty of time for the journey, as the minor road to Edale can be very busy, and the car parks are always under pressure.

Features

  • Refreshments available (Pub/cafe)
  • Toilets available
  • Accessible by public transport

Meeting point is the Edale Train Station Car Park (pay car park). Take the turn off the main Edale Road to Edale village, and the car park is up a lane on the left, at the rear of the train station. This is a smallish car park, and if full – there may be spaces in the nearby main carpark; or there is an ‘overflow’ field nearby. Bring coins/credit or debit cards for the pay machines! Happily, there is no pay by mobile phone app facility.
