This is a varied walk with some hills and descents, one stile, great views and a lunch stop at the "film set" village of Hambleden. There are no toilets at Marlow Station, but we pass some in the town. We walk through scenic woodlands and pasture, climbing some hills. Lunch is at the Stag & Huntsman in Hambleden and there are benches nearby for those with picnics. The village shop sells hot drinks, cakes and snacks. If you want a pub lunch, please email Annette by Tuesday 3 September. St Mary's Church is worth a visit, to see the 17th century D'Oyley memorial.
After lunch we walk to Mill End and cross the Thames via bridges over the weir and lock, to continue through countryside and hamlets, with one more climb. Finally, we follow the river into Henley where there is a possibility of tea.
Catch the 09.08 train from Padington and change swiftly at Maidenhead, to platform 5b for the Marlow train. Taking an earlier train on the Elizabeth Line and using a Freedom Pass for more of the journeys is also possible, but it takes longer.
The Thames Branches Day Ranger is £17.20 using the Network/Senior Railcard dscount, but it does not give Oyster or Freedom Pass discounts. It could be cheaper for those with a Freedom Pass (or 60+ Oyster) and a Network/Senior Railcard to buy a return to Henley from boundary Zone 6 and single from Maidenhead to Marlow (£xx in total).
There is a limit of 20 attendees for this walk and booking is essential. Please email Annette to book.
For those wishing to shorten the walk, there are buses to Henley Station from Mill End, after 6½ miles. It's also possible to avoid the final climb by following the Thames after crossing it.
