Overview

This is a 12.5 mile circular walk staring and ending at Knebworth station.

The first landmark of the day is  Knebworth Hall. The house has been the home of the Lytton Family since 1490 and was originally built in red brick as a late Gothic Manor house around a central court. The house was remodelled in Tudor Gothic style in the early 19th century and the interior of the house was redesigned by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century. The house and grounds have been a popular setting for films and pop concerts. Since 1974 Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and many others have performed in the grounds.

After passing the deer park we enter the lovely Graffidge Wood. Lunch is at the Strathmore Arms. This pub does not serve food on Saturdays but we can eat our food either indoors or in the pub garden. After lunch we visit the All Saints Church in St Paul’s Walden which was used as a location in the 2020 film Emma starring Anya Taylor Joy.  We glimpse the country estate of the Bowes-Lyon family (St Paul's Walden Bury) as we walk past.

We cross over huge fields on the Hertfordshire Way with lovely open views as we head for Hoo Park. We have the option of a refreshment break in Codicote, before more field and road walking takes us back to Knebworth. We can have a drink at the Station Pub while waiting for the hourly train (33 mins past the hour) back to London
