Join me on this walk around two of the areas major quarries taking in seldom used footpaths, woodland and a nice steady climb to Leicestershires highest point. Cliffe Hill quarry began in the 19th century and continues to this day. The old and new quarries are linked by a 714 mtr tunnel meaning an extra 60 million tonnes of previously sterilized high quality granite can be released.
From Cliffe Hill we walk to Stanton under Bardon before heading off to Bardon, heading to the summit and a welcome lunch. There are great views from both quarries over the rolling Leicestershire countryside. Bardon quarry has operated for over 400 years and produces 3 million tonnes of rock a year. There are veins of quartz containing copper and gold.
There are a number of stiles on the route.
Toilets and refreshments are available at the Charnwood Arms
Parking will be on Cartwright Way as parking restrictions are now in force at the Charnwood Arms
During the walk there are great views over the rolling countryside, some moderate ascents and woodland which should be starting to come into full bloom. A full view of all the industrial development in the area will also be on show.
Well behaved dogs will be welcome
