WALK DESCRIPTION: A linear walk, 5 miles. This is a walk along the Digbeth Branch Canal and Grand Union Canal and the River Cole. You will be able to witness the dereliction prior to the intended regeneration of East Side, and the commerce and industry along the banks of the Grand Union. This latter section contains much colourful graffiti. We then enter the woods and meadows of the Shire Country Park and follow the Cole Valley Walk southwards, passing the Ackers Ski slope en route. The walk is varied then, but surprisingly green for much of the way. The walk ends at Sarehole Mill, where the cafe serves drinks, cakes and scones. Bus numbers 5 and 11 can be caught outside Sarehole Mill for the return. The route is paved the whole way, with a little surface mud in one or two places. The whole walk is just over 5 miles, with a total of 237 ft ascent.
