Overview

Bring picnic lunch. Morning 3.39 miles. From Stratford upon Avon train station we head down a residential road, ducking between two houses into a narrow passage which takes us into a network of paths until we reach Shottery Fields. We cross the fields, with Stratford College and then a play area on our right, until we reach Shottery Road. With the Bell Inn on our right we make our way to Anne Hathaway's Cottage, and maybe a coffee stop at the cafe opposite. We then head to Jubilee Walk and continue through pretty lanes and roads with stunning thatched cottages until we arrive back in Stratford and make our way to Holy Trinity church where William Shakespeare was christened and buried. We can settle here for our picnic lunch on the many benches overlooking the River Avon. We continue along the river, passing the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and into Bancroft Gardens, where we can explore the statues, information and refreshments. Afternoon 3.24 miles. From Bancroft Gardens we take the pedestrian Old Tramway bridge to cross the River Avon and continue walking along the old Tramway until we reach a main road. We cross this road and turn right along the pavement until we reach the river again. We turn left to head down river to admire the new Shakespeare Marina. We head back up river past the weir and cross the old Tramway Bridge again. We go along the canal briefly then make our way through the streets to find Shakespeare's birthplace. Then back to the train station and home. Both walks are on level paths, lanes and roads with no stiles.
