A 4/5 mile walk which will explore some buildings of interest on Tavistock and the canal.
Tavistock has a rich and varied history, remains of a Benedictine Abbey destroyed by Viking raiders in AD997. Under the Abbey’s patronage it became a prosperous market town, a centre for the woollen cloth production, a 14th century stannary town. The Bedford family were gifted the estate following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. The 7th Duke contributed many buildings in the town much of the wealth being created by his mining ventures. The canal was designed by John Taylor between 1803-1817, to link Tavistock and its rich mining areas to the port of Morwellham with its tidal access on the river Tamar.
This walk will be on level and firm surfaces.
