This is a walk in 2 parts and it is possible just to undertake the first part of the walk for those who do not want to climb to the Hillfort. (5 miles)
Part 1.
Starting from Brecon we will thread through back streets to pick up a path past the Cathedral into Priory Groves to walk through woodland and along quiet lanes to the village of Llandew. This hamlet was once the home of Gerald of Wales and had its own palace for the Bishop of Saint Davids. We will visit the church where a member of the church will be there to meet us and make us tea and coffee.
We will then follow the river Honddu back to Brecon and to the Cathedral.
Approx 5 miles. Ramblers who do not want to do the whole walk can end the walk at this point.
There are some uneven paths through woodlands and some short ascents up the lane to Llandew and through woods. Paths can be slippery and muddy after rain.
Part 2.
From the Cathedral we will head up to the Maendu Well for a picnic stop and climb then to the top of the Pen y Crug Iron Age hillfort, where, if the weather is clear there are stunning views of Pen y Fan and the Black Mountains. We will descend via a lane back to the Cathedral and the car park. Steady climb 140m of incline.
Approx 4 miles.
