Overview

This walk from Colwell visits several historic sites and old villages, and two reservoirs built to supply Newcastle and Gateshead. We pass the site of an Iron Age settlement and a castle near Great Swinburne. We see a magnificent 18th-century tithe barn before coming to the site of the old TB sanatorium at Barrasford Park which was in use from 1907 to 1960.  Our route then takes us to Colt Crag reservoir and Thockrington (with the 11th-century church of St Aidan) and returns to Colwell past Hallington and its reservoirs.
