Overview

As part of the Pennine Way Anniversary, our route takes us to a hidden gem for walkers – the spectacular classic U-shaped glaciated valley of High Cup Nick.  We should have wonderful views across the Eden Valley to the Lake District.

From Dufton we follow the Pennine Way climbing via Dod Hill, Peeping Hill and Narrow Gate to reach High Cup Nick. Descending we follow a path along High Cup Scar with views down the Gill and then drop down on access land over Middle Tongue. We return along the valley from Harbour Flatt and a short section of the Pennine Journey into Dufton where refreshments await.

Meet at Dufton public car park where public toilets are available. Car sharing is highly recommended. From Hexham, the most straightforward route is the A686 via Alston to Langwathby, where you turn left just past the railway bridge on to the B6412, signposted to Culgaith and Appleby. After 4.5 miles, turn left at the T-junction towards Temple Sowerby. Go through the village and follow the sign (right) to the A66 (Brough). Join the A66 and follow it past Crackenthorpe until you reach the B6542 into Appleby. Take the B6542 and follow it round in a circle until you reach a T-junction. Turn right here, signposted Dufton - 2 miles. Follow the road into the village.
