Overview

Crossing the River Gelt, we go up to a delightful green track to Gairs colliery and the industrial heritage of Geltsdale.  We then join the ‘Old Coal Road’ from Hallbankgate to Newbiggin, cross Old Water Bridge and go round the head of the valley to the New Water river. Entering access land on Cumrew Fell, we reach a fine viewpoint over the Eden valley towards the Lake District on Cardunneth Pike (a Bronze Age burial cairn).  Our return takes us back to the valley over Hespeck Raise and access land.
