This is a ten mile circular walk featuring woodland tracks and some nice views, but with a few miles of walking on minor roads. It takes about five hours. The walk starts from Canongate Car Park in Jedburgh. We take the subway under the A68, then cross Canongate Bridge and leave the town heading uphill towards Hartrigge. We then do a few miles through woods before arriving on the Roman Road, Deer Street. (Here, if the weather is very poor, we may decide to turn left and convert the walk into a nice 6 mile circular with no roads). From there we head right then take the minor road to Crailinghall, and continue on until eventually we join St Cuthbert’s Way, which we follow back to Deer Street. There are nice views on this leg of the walk. We’ll break for lunch at a pleasant spot on the banks of Oxnam Water. We leave St Cuthbert’s Way and join the Borders Abbeys Way back to Jedburgh, taking the path by Jed Water back to the town centre.
It is a longish walk, with a fair bit of ascent in the first 3 miles. Some parts of it can be quite muddy (even after a week of dry weather - so it will surely be quite muddy in December). The walk is suitable for anyone who doesn’t mind the distance, is prepared for a long steady uphill walk in the first third, and is happy to ramble through some wet-muddy paths.
