Overview

A walk across the beautiful, historic moorland between Ros Castle and Eglingham in North Northumberland.  Starting at Hepburn Wood car park, we walk the short distance to Ros Castle, a  steepish but very short climb up from the road, but well worth it for the 360-degree view that we will have from the top.  We then head across Bewick Moor to Blawearie and Bewick Hill (with its cup and ring-marked rocks, hill forts and views) before returning through Hepburn Wood to the start.

This walk starts from Hepburn Wood car park near Chillingham. To get to the starting point, head for the A697 Coldstream road, travelling north. Turn right at Wooperton on to the B6346. This turn-off is signposted for Eglingham and Alnwick. After about 2.5 miles, you come to a crossroads where the B6346 turns right towards Eglingham. Turn left on to the minor road towards Chatton & Chillingham. Pass the right turn signposted to Old Bewick church. At the next junction, follow the road to the right, passing the turning on the right which is signposted to Bewick Folly. About 1 mile after the turn to Bewick Folly, there is a right turn that is not signposted - the signpost is there, but the signs have been removed. This is the road towards the Hepburn Wood car park. Turn here. You should have the wall of the Chillingham Estate on your left. After about 1/2 mile, the road climbs steeply. The car park is on this steep section, on the right.
