This very amble ramble will be a complete contrast to Frank’s ‘WWR Challenger’ the previous day. The mileage is low, the pace will be slow and the walk is pretty much flat being in the Vale of Steeple Ashton. From Worton, we follow a mill race to a converted mill before heading out to Marston with its open common land and traditional Methodist Chapel. ‘There is a distinct feeling here of the backwoods and of being closer to rurality than in most of the villages in the Vale’ to quote Brian Woodruffe in his book Wiltshire Villages. Long Street, more of a green lane, brings us to Great Cheverell Mill, a reminder of the former cloth trade in this area, before the highlight of the walk in the shape of Mill Farm Trout Lakes that cover an area of some 12 acres. Bring snack.
