From the car park, the walk climbs 430 feet to the top of Moelygolfa at first through fields and then woodland. We descend by the same route. This section of the route involves climbing a gate at the start (and on the return).
After Moelygolfa we take footpaths through fields and forests to the top of Rodney’s Pillar. From that point we take further woodland paths (full of brambles in places) and emerge at the road below the eastern end of Middletown Hill. Those wishing to terminate the walk here can follow the road west for about half a mile to be back at the car. The alternative for the rest is a steep ascent up Middletown Hill rewarded by a clear and open walk along the open hilltop and a steady but not steep descent to the car park.
Although graded as strenuous the route has been modified through being shortened and includes the option of missing one summit. So maybe it’s a strenuous minus?
