Leaders: Jane P. and Maggie S.
We begin with the extraordinary Church of St John the Baptist at Ashton, described as one of the most quietly intoxicating churches in Devon, which “sits on a steep bluff overlooking the Teign Valley”. The large wooden painted ‘grisaille” panels have survived the Reformation and Civil War. The Saints apart from George who is in full dragon fighting armour appear in contemporary 15th century dress.
There is also a fifteenth century wall painting of the wounded Christ in front of the cross surrounded by objects used during his Crucifixion, plus carved bench ends in the nave.
We take footpath and lane to Trusham Church of St Michael the Archangel, enjoy coffee high up in the Churchyard among the graves of Charles Causley’s ancestry with fine views, then return via the delightful River Teign to Ashton Manor and the Village Hall.
This is a very beautiful walk as well as an appreciation of what may be unknown locally but is also close to Exeter!
If you would like to join this walk, please notify the leaders, preferably by email, so that they can inform you of any late changes to arrangements.
