This is a classic walk through some our finest limestone dales, starting in the beautiful village of Alstonefield, and exploring the dales of Milldale, Wolfscote, Biggin and Beresford, and visiting Hartington along the way. Apart from some splendid scenery and views, there will be a good chance of seeing some of the breeding birds of this area, which include peregrine, red kite; and summer migrants such as redstarts and various warblers. Flowers should also be spectacular, particularly in Biggin Dale.
Please be aware that this walk includes a steep and strenuous ascent to exit Wolfscote Dale, which some walkers may find intimidating.
Bringing a packed lunch would be preferable, although there are refreshment opportunities at Hartington (halfway), and pub at the end. There are toilets in Alstonefield at the start and finish, and also in Milldale and Hartington on the route. Yes folks - this is a 4-Loo hike! Pay parking at the meet up point (credit card or Ring-Go app), or voluntary donations at two other car parks in the village.
