Overview

A Moderate 7.5 miles circular walk.  BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL - please contact the walk leader Jay using the contact details provided to book.

Meet at the Logie Coldstone village hall, AB34 5PQ, which is on the north side of Logie Coldstone on the A97, on the east side of the road.  See OS Landranger Map number 37 Strathdon and Alford, Grid Reference NJ434 045.  Nearest postcode AB34 5PQ.  There is also parking at the Logie Coldstone School car park, on the same section of road, but 100m nearer to the village centre on the west side of the A97.  There are no gates into the school parking area.

This walk is a country walk, rather than a hill walk.  The two local hills are Culblean 604m to the south west and Morvern 872m to the north west; we will have views of both these.  The walk includes woodland, moorland and stream side paths, most are easy walking, if a bit rough at times, some require care, (eg tree roots).  There is one burn to cross; gaiters may be useful.  The last section is along the A97 for 600m.  At the start of the walk, we pass a hidden loch, Blelack House and the Wells of Poldhu.

Good walking boots are strongly advised and waterproof jacket and trousers are essential, (Hat plus thin gloves – good to have in the rucksack).  Walking poles, if you use them.  Bring drinks and pack lunch.

Please indicate if you would like to join the group for a cuppa at the Tarland Tearoom afterwards, we may reserve a table.

Toilets – There are no public toilets in Logie Coldstone.  If you are driving via Tarland, the Commercial Hotel in the main Square, where the shops are located, permits the public to use its lavatories, (thanks to an arrangement with Aberdeenshire Council). Allow time to stop there if you wish and then proceed to Logie Coldstone to meet the group.

Other General Information

Wells of Poldhu

Wells which were said to have beneficial properties.  They lost their local popularity with the opening of nearby Pannanich wells.  Two of the wells are built from granite, square in shape within a raised area.  Over the years they have become heavily overgrown with bushes.  Under the Adopt-a-Monument Scheme the Cromar History group have cleared the area and brought the wells back to life.  A drain has been installed around the well to deal with waterlogging, and a footbridge installed to give access to the site.  The well culverts that run from the wells to the adjacent burn were cleared in June-October 2008, and the culverts relined.
