This is a lovely walk and well worth the longish journey. It's mostly on easy tracks through woods and if we're lucky with dappled sunlight, as the leaf cover will not yet be complete. Please be prepared for hills with some steep ups and downs.
We will meet at Box Hill and Westhumble station, a popular starting point for walks in the area. We shall be walking a large loop around Box Hill, including Norbury Park, Mickleham Downs, and Headley Heath.
We can stop for lunch either in a car park on the Heath where there is a snack bar selling burgers, hot dogs and hot drinks, or a little later in a more charming spot with views south from the North Downs escarpment. Please bring a packed lunch.
After lunch we will continue along the North Downs Way and descend into Dorking by a back route.
As at 26 March, there was no mud anywhere on the walk. If we have heavy rain, there certainly will be. Whatever the weather, please wear boots as you will need the support and grip in some places.
Take the 09:41 from London Victoria to Horsham arriving Westhumble at 10:37. Freedom Pass holders are advised to buy a ticket from Ewell East. Please note that trains to Westhumble are only once an hour so we will not wait for any latecomers. This is the latest train we can get to start the walk in good time, and it may mean you have to start your journey before Freedom Passes are valid.
We shall end the walk at Dorking station as there are more frequent trains by the return route to Victoria and also services to Wimbledon and Waterloo if you prefer.
There are no toilets at Box Hill and Westhumble station, so please use the ones on the train. Dorking station has toilets. On the route, there are no toilets but plenty of bushes!
