A London linear walk from Marble Arch in the West End to Wapping in the East End, passing many memorials and places associated with the war effort with some areas that were affected by the blitz. We will cross the Royal Parks connecting with a number of memorials and places; walk along Whitehall towards Parliament Sq. and the Thames Embankment. Examples of memorials seen are RAF Bomber Command, Military memorials at Wellington Arch, Guards Chapel & Memorial, Women in War Memorial, The Battle of Britain and Royal Airforce Memorial. Picnic lunch will be in Victoria Embankment Gardens (cafe & toilets nearby).
After lunch, the walk enters part of The City of London, thus passing a few examples of City Churches, severely bombed in the Blitz, (may be time for a brief look inside a couple of churches). Then our route passes through to the St. Pauls area where we'll be ready for a tea break in Cafe 101 of The Salvation Army HQ. Our final couple of miles, takes us beyond The Tower to what was originally the smaller of the old London Docks, entering the East End, passing the now modern St. Katherines dock and Hermitage Basin area. This area and beyond was severely devastated by bombs and later redeveloped from the 1970s. Our final stop will be at the modern Blitz Memorial by the Thames, before walking on to Wapping station.
Meet outside Marble Arch Underground Station. After passing through ticket barrier, go left out Exit 3 for Marble Arch/Hyde Park. Wait on stone concourse, near bench seats.
Toilets along route in Parks, Victoria Embankment, Cafe and St Katherines Dock.
Many dropout points at stations. Start and Finish stations are a short train route from Elizabeth Line.
A number of very brief stops will be made at points of interest/memorials, as the walk is 9 mls.
Bring Picnic Lunch.
