Starting from Monsall Head, this walk takes us through the delightful Monsall Dale, and over the limestone upland to Taddington, before making an airy traverse above Millers Dale on the return. The rewards of wild flowers, birds and butterflies are exceptional. The dales are the home of Dippers and Grey Wagtails, and we may be lucky enough to see fast-flying Silver Washed Fritillary butterflies. Kestrels and Sparrow Hawks are regularly seen, while Red Kites have bred in the uplands around Taddington in recent years. Aside from all the nature – it’s a fabulous walk scenically, and one of my favourites.
This walk requires sure-footedness and a reasonable head for heights, for the Millers Dale high-level traverse section. The path on this traverse is narrow in places, gravelly and with some broken edges; and the drops on one side are steep and sustained. Extreme care is required at all times. Please call the walk leader with any questions concerning this aspect.
Bring a packed lunch. There are public toilets at the start, and at White Lodge after 1.7 miles, but I have to say, both of these are of a pretty low-standard. There is a cafe and pub at the start/end of the walk.
Meet at the pay car park with the public loo, situated behind the Monsall Head Hotel. There is also a very small pay car park at the front of the hotel, and some roadside parking on the nearby minor road to Little Longstone, if you’re early enough.
