The walk follows the Nidderdale Way footpath all the way up to Scar House reservoir and back into Lofthouse. We follow the route mainly at low on the valley bottom although there are a few climbs as we near the reservoir at which point we will stop for a lunch break. After the break a short climb onto the top of Scar House pasture we continue on the Nidderdale Way to reach the village of Middlesmoor. We then drop down to How Stean Gorge to the visitors centre for after the walk refreshments.
Weather permitting the views on some parts of the walk are breathtaking particularly on the approach to the reservoir and at Middlesmoor and How Stean Gorge . There are a few stretches of road walking along the route mainly at the back end of the walk. There is a small car park at the village hall and toilet facilities at Lofthouse, Scarhouse and How Stean visitors centre.
