We will leave Winchester from the St Catherine's Park and Ride, and walk up over Twyford Down and Hazeley Down to the memorial at the site of the London Regiment World War One Embarkation camps.
Continuing on through some beautiful countryside, we will walk up to the site that reminds us of a much later conflict, where a nuclear bunker was secretly built into a reservoir above Twyford as a regional control centre to co-ordinate post-attack repairs to the water supply. We will be able to see some features of this through the fencing and enjoy some lovely views.
Circling back through woods and fields to Twyford, once described as "the jewel in the crown of Hampshire's villages" (although not any longer!) we will follow the Itchen Way back to our start point.
This is a country walk so please bring a picnic, flask and water. You will need to wear suitable footwear for any muddy stretches, and appropriate clothing for the weather.
There is a toilet at the start of the walk, and another at the 7 mile point where we stop for our sandwiches.
There is also the option of a bus back to Winchester from Twyford, after 8 miles.
