In the company of Fiona McIntyre, an artist whose work forms part of the "Every Step of The Way" exhibition at Winchester's Arc gallery, we will walk along a section of the South Downs Way and whilst absorbing the atmosphere there will be opportunities to hear from Fiona and Harry, the walk leader, about art and the countryside.
Mattingley bowl is a most impressive spot which must have been a tense place when Eisenhower addressed troops the day before D Day and this in stark contrast to the hedonistic use for the Boomtown Festival in August each year.
For those who would like a shorter walk and to hear the initial interpretations retracing steps back to the car park would be straightforward.
The route will continue on the undulating Downs taking a very minor road near Gander Down and then further along the South Downs as we take in panoramic views and after a descent have a final climb back to Cheesefoot Head where there is sometimes a coffee van.
This walk has been designed to complement the current "Every Step of The Way" South Downs art exhibition at Winchester's Arc gallery from April to July this year.
** This walk is lead by Winchester Ramblers, but booking is required on The Arc Website (see link below)
