The walk heads west along the Cleveland Way as far as Griff Lodge, at which point we head north, skirting Griff Farm, to High Ash plantation. Afer a short walk along a footpath running parallel with the B1257 road we reach the driveway leading down to Rievaulx Terrace, a National Trust property, where a permissive path descends to the road leading into the village of Rievaulx. The magnificent Cistercian Abbey in the village was founded in 1132 by monks from Clairvaux Abbey in France.
Further along the road at Rievaulx Bridge our route takes us east for a short while along a quiet road where we join the Cleveland Way as far as Griff Lodge. Rather than retracing our foosteps and returning to Helmsley along the Cleveland Way we take a detour through Duncombe Park passing the main house built and completed for Thomas Dncombe in 1713. A short descent across a field brings us down to the Helmsley Walled Garden and back to the start point.
There are stunning views and landscapes throughout the walk.
