Overview

The Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge, are you ready?

We start the 24-mile challenge from Horton in Ribblesdale, where we'll make our ascent up to the summit of Pen-y-Ghent (694m), which is approximately 1.5 times the height of the Wrekin. After a quick break, we descend down a well graded path and head across moorland, with a short road section towards the imposing structure of Ribblehead Viaduct.

Before and after the second peak, refreshments may be purchased, but as always carry what you need.

From here we start to make our way up to Whernside (736m) where the path becomes more challenging, so good boots are essential for this event. As we continue our journey the final peak is right in front of us. Descending Whernside the rocks are polished and can be slippy, combining parts that are steep, time and care is definitely needed.

From here, the hike is out in the open and sometimes boggy, but it is still a good path to follow which leads us the final ascent.

There is a short vertical rocky outcrop, which believe me is easier than it sounds, as it is well used. A man with a baby strapped to his chest was doing it when I was last there! Once completed, it's scree up to Ingleborough Summit (723m) and that's the ascents complete. From here it's descent all the way, 2-miles of really well graded path and 2-miles of rocky outcrop, which requires some clambering.

As the route opens up, the train crossing is the final hurdle in the completion of the Y3P Challenge. If you have got this far in under 12hours you have successfully completed the challenge.

As this is a big day, I would definitely recommend camping or a B&B for Friday and Saturday night. The town has a few pitches and the one I have used is cheap and cheerful enough, and is also first come first serve, but has plenty of pitches.

Bring with you plenty of food and fluids as there are limited options on route, which may not be available.

Good boots, poles and waterproof coats/trousers, gloves, gaiters and warm kit are essential.

This challenge requires a good level of fitness to complete and sub walks for this event will be available to get a good team together to smash the challenge.
