Walking in Powys

Covering the former counties of Montgomeryshire, Brecknock and Radnorshire, Powys is a land of green and sparsely populated open countryside with unlimited walking opportunities.

Our hills and valleys stretch from the Welsh borders in the east to the coast in the west. In the centre are the Cambrian Mountains and the dams and reservoirs of Elan Valley. To the north we abut the Eryri/Snowdonia National Park and to the south are the Brecon Beacons/Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

Powys is crossed by Offa’s Dyke Path, Glyndwr’s Way, the Cambrian Way, the Severn Way, the Wye Valley Walk and numerous other long-distance trails. There are wonderful views and wildlife interest wherever you go.

Our walking community

  • We support our two Ramblers Groups: Welshpool, East Radnor. The Four Wells Group has now closed and its membership has been transferred to the East Radnor Group. Click on the links below for more information about the regular Welshpool and East Radnor walk programmes

  • We protect public rights of way. A quarter of the Welsh total is in Powys

  • We promote volunteer groups carrying out practical work on footpaths

  • We work with local authorities and other bodies to help people enjoy the countryside

  • We stand up for the interests of walkers
