We start from The Malt in Aston-on-Trent and walk along some quiet roads. On the edge of the village, we join a track between fields and head towards Weston Grange. Another track takes us to the village of Weston. A short way through the village at a picturesque sign, we join a path that winds past a scenic lake. After a short road section across the railway, we join a track to St Mary the Virgin Church. This then leads us to Tarasivka, a Ukranian Youth Centre. Very soon, we cross a bridge and join the Trent and Mersey Canal. We follow the canal for over a mile, passing various locks and bridges. At Aston Lock, we leave the canal and head back to Aston for a well earned optional meal.
This walk is part of my Flat 5 Series where all the walks are about 5 miles and are mainly level. There is a total ascent of 119 ft, no stiles and well made paths throughout.
There is no need to book in advance for this walk, just turn up on the day. If you wish to join us for a meal at The Malt in Aston after the walk, please let me know via the email link by no later than 11th October so I can make a firm meal booking. On the day, will all diners please arrive in plenty of time to chose your meal before we start the walk.
Driving time from West Bridgford is about 40 minutes.
You can park your car at The Malt or on The Green. Please car share wherever possible (if you can provide a lift or are looking for a lift, please contact the leader).
Part of the way through the walk, there will be a drinks stop.
There is the chance to observe the canal folk in the art of traversing the locks. As there is often a queue of boats at the locks, there is an opportunity to chat and exchange experiences with the water users.
Public transport option: Some buses serve Aston from Derby, please check before travelling.
