Overview

You can expect many contrasts in this interesting walk.

From Birtley the route passes the site of the castle on the way to the North Tyne at Wark. We follow the Tyne Trail north, picking up the disused Border Counties Railway and through Countesspark Woods to Redesmouth - where the old Wansbeck (Wannie) line joined the Border's line.  Leaving the remains of the railway heritage, we climb up above the valley via Buteland to Birtley.
