By lane and footpath we make our way to the beautiful mainly 15th century Church of St Mary the Virgin Stockleigh Pomeroy with it’s fine, carved bench ends. We return via tracks to Chilton, Perry Farm and Cheriton Fitzpaine. The village has two old pubs serving the village for 150 years and the oldest thatched longhouse in England.
The Dominican-born novelist resided in the village for the last 20 years of her life and from there finished and published Wide Sargasso Sea in 1966 and Sleep it Off Lady in 1976. She lived at 6, Landboat Bungalows and died aged 84 in 1979, her grave is in the churchyard of St Matthew’s.
There will be a couple of short readings from both of these books.
