Today's 8 mile walk starts from the small car park at Castell y Bere, Llanfihangel -y-pennant and explores the beautiful Nant-yr-Eira valley and the lower slopes of Cadair Idris at Pencoed. There are a few tricky sections to negotiate with stiles and where the path is narrow and wet and the ground uneven, but in the main the route will follow field paths and grassy or gravel tracks. The high point of the walk is at just over 1000 feet but the accumulated ascent for the whole walk is 1650 feet. We shall start by circling the northern flanks of Foel Cae'rbellan to access the valley of Nant-yr-Eira before passing through woodland to eventually emerge at Rhiwogof where there are fine views over the Tal y Llyn lake below. We shall then head west to Pencoed before returning to our starting point. If anyone wishes to explore the 13th century ruins of Castell y Bere which was built by the Welsh ruler Llywelyn the Great, they may do so from here.
