At some 630 metres, Y Garn is an outlier from the main Rhinogydd ridge, lying about 3 miles East of Diffwys. As such, it offers a very good view of the higher peaks of the range. From Ganllwyd the route ascends through deciduous woodland alongside the Afon Gamlan, with scenic its waterfalls. Emerging from the woodland we ascend more steeply through the ruins of the Cefn Coch gold mines. After passing through a gap in the wall the conditions underfoot become more rocky, with a final push up to the summit over grass and reeds. The descent is generally not steep, following a stone wall down the south ridge to join the very scenic New Precipice walk, with excellent views towards Cadair Idris and the Mawddach estuary. We finish by heading down through conifers, past Llyn Tanygraig reservoir and down a grassy hillside to Llanelltyd.
