This is the fourth stage of our Thames Footpath route. You aren't committed to doing every stage and don’t have to have completed any of the earlier stages - just come along if it appeals! For this stage toilet facilities and drink options are limited – you have been warned!
Today is longer than our previous stages – we will be covering c13 miles. It is worth bringing snack, drink and food options with you as the formal lunch stop will be late – we will be stopping in Richmond after c8 miles.
We have now left the industrial landscape of our earlier walks and the highlights of central London to some of my favourite parts of the Thames. We will meet at St Mary’s church right by Putney Bridge on the south side. There is a small café that does great food and has toilet facilities
Our initial route hopefully will let us see lots of rowers and activity at the boat houses. We follow the towpath and will be able to see on the other side of the river the newly developed Craven Cottage football ground, home to Fulham FC. We progress up to Barnes Bridge and then onto Kew Bridge. Kew Gardens will be on our left hand side and we should be able to see Syon House over the river. We will stop for a late lunch in Richmond – after c8 miles. There are lots of river side food options, or bring your own and sit by the river. The afternoon walk will be c5 miles – Ham House is one of the few landmarks – however the walking is scenic and tranquil. We finish by Kingston Bridge – and the walk to the station is c10 minutes. Kingston is a mainline station with frequent trains to London Waterloo taking c30 minutes and costing c£9. It is still in the Oyster zone.
