Y Llethr, which translates simply as “the slope”, is the highest summit in the Rhinogydd, the long ridge of hills running above the Cardigan Bay coast between Maentwrog and Barmouth. At 756 metres high, its summit is rather unimpressive, with none of the rocky ruggedness of its neighbours to the north. Despite this, it’s well worth a visit, both in its own right and because of the wonderful, wild surroundings in which it lies. Our walk today approaches from the west, taking an unusual route past the little lake of Llyn Perfeddau to reach Llyn Hywel under the northern flanks of Y Llethr. From here, it is a steep climb to the summit plateau but we avoid the badly eroded main path by heading up from the western end of the lake, starting with a very short, easy scramble which gives way to rock-strewn grass. We continue over the summit to descend the grassy slopes on the other side, eventually making our down to an easy track and back to the start on the Ardudwy Way.
