This walk remembers a much-loved member of the Calderdale Ramblers, Stuart, who plotted this route a few weeks before he passed away in 2024. Like Stuart himself, this walk offers little treats around each corner, beginning in the town centre of Elland, and tracing a route past some of Calderdale's past history, into beautiful woodland, passing Cley House, seen in Last Tango in Halifax, and then on for lunch in the grounds of Copley Church where lies the grave of Calderdale's only Victoria Cross recipient. From there, we amble gently back along the Rochdale canal, admiring the wildlife as we go.
Pennine weather can be unpredictable and woodland can potential be muddy so please dress appropriately for the conditions. Bring a packed lunch and drink. The walk begins at the pay-and -display carpark in central Elland, which is currently no charge on Sundays at time of print, but this may change. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on a lead.
