The walk starts in Avebury World Heritage Site, home to maybe the best preserved henge in the country. The stones encircle the old village and were in place some 4000BC years. The path to the stat of the Ridgeway takes us past Silbury Hill, an entirely man made structure and West Kennet Long Barrow. The Ridgway National Trail formally begins in West Kennett and is popularly known as 'Britain's Oldest Road'. The trail takes us past the former Iron Age Fort of Barbury Castle, complete with panoramic views of the surrounding area. Passes along Smeathe's Ridge to the end of the days walk, the elegantly named village Ogborne St George. The walk will be reasonably paced 3mph to fit in with local bus route timetables. Please bring a packed lunch.
No booking required.
The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors, such as rural bus routes, the weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken.
