Overview

Another opportunity to walk along the Crouch estuary to Burnham-on-Crouch, also known as "the Cowes of the East Coast" due to its popularity with boating enthusiasts. The tidal river Crouch is a haven for bird life and offers great views across the mudflats and estuary. It’s all big skies and contemplation as we walk eastwards on parts of the sea wall toward the North Sea. We start at North Fambridge and walk by marinas, creeks, salt-marshes, reed ponds and lots of sailing boats. Birds you might expect to see include: Shelducks, Sparrowhawks, Swifts and Wagtails. Samphire, a succulent sea “asparagus”, should be in season.

We continue the walk along the promenade and Quay as we enter Burnham and pass the Grade ll listed Royal Corinthian Yacht club (no Christmas lunch today though!) to join the England Coast Path before circling back to the Quay at Burnham with its many pubs and cafes (a cheeky little extension of about 3 miles).

Exit points before the end of the walk: Althorne after about 4 miles, Burnham-on-Crouch after 9 miles

This is a fairly flat, 12-mile walk along the river in the Dengie Peninsula in Essex.  The station is a 20 min walk from the Quay at Burnham-on-Crouch. Parts of the sea wall path are narrow, meaning we may need to walk in a single file, and at a brisk(ish) pace. It is often muddy but we should be lucky with the dryer weather.

Lunch: Picnic lunch in the open air. There are no shops or pub stops on route so bring a packed lunch. There is nowhere to purchase food until the end of the walk.

Toilets: NONE!!! This is a no toilet walk so . please use the facilities on the trains or be prepared for an outdoor adventure, but please note there is very little coverage apart from the odd tree.

Dogs: Due to the narrow nature of the path, in parts, this walk is not suitable for dogs.

No booking required.

The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors such as, weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken.
