Join me for a festive walk along the Regents Canal, from Camden to Canary Wharf. As we walk towards Kings Cross we will admire the Grade 11 listed gasholders (The Triplets) on route to Granary Square, home to Central Saint Martins, Queer Britain (the national LGBTQ+ museum) and Canopy Market (all expected to be closed!). If we are lucky, Word on the Water, a restored 1920's Dutch barge selling affordable books, will entertain us with music. We leave the canal briefly to walk through Islington and rejoin at Angel, passing colourful barges and houseboats as we continue towards the East End. The stretch from Hoxton to Hackney highlights the river's industrial heritage. We will pass Broadway market and Victoria Park and the Ragged School Museum at Mile End. The Regents canal finally joins the River Thames at Limehouse Basin. We follow the Thames to Canary Wharf where our journey will end in a local watering hole providing an opportunity to continue with the festive celebrations.
There is no official lunch stop on this walk so bring snacks. We may forage as we find (if anything is open). Finding toilets will be a challenge on a bank holiday, so be prepared!
Travel: Camden Road Rail Station (Zone 2) is on the London Overground Line (Stratford to Richmond line) and is our meeting point (outside).
Please note the London Overground is not operational on Boxing Day and your nearest tube stop is Camden Town on the Northern Line, a 15 minute walk away. As you leave Camden Town tube station, proceed up Camden Rd past Sainsbury's Supermarket on your left, continue towards the station on your left before the railway bridge. Please allow time to get to the meeting point.
Tubes and buses are running Boxing Day.
No booking required.
The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors such as, weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken.
