Before you get your hopes too high, there is still no train to the summit of Ingleborough! However, a short train ride from Ribblehead station to Horton in Ribblesdale station makes it feasible to do a linear walk from Horton to Ribblehead via Ingleborough summit. We park within sight of Ribblehead Viaductnear the junction of the B6255 and B6479 and walk to Ribblehead station. There is no ticket office there anymore so you do need to buy your ticket in advance for the 09:47 train from Ribblehead. The price should be £2.60 (with a senior railcard).
Alighting from the train at Horton in Ribblesdale we follow the obvious path through Sulber Nick where we join the Pennine Bridleway which takes us to Trow Gill and on to the stunning sight of Fell Beck tumbling into Gaping Ghyll. The path to Ingleborough summit is then an obvious steady climb. From the summit we descend to Simon Fell and continue North East to Fell Close Rocks and back to the B6255.
There is a toilet at Ribblehead station.
You should plan on arriving at Ribblehead well before between 9:00 and 09:15 to give yourself plenty of time to don boots and walk to the station in time for the 09:45 train - if you miss it the next one is not until after 12:00!
Post-walk refreshments will be in the Hawes Creamery
Walkers can meet us at Horton station if they prefer but would need to make their own arrangments for getting back from Ribblehead to Horton. Please contact the walk leader if you are considering doing this.
